The MPH Degree is the primary professional degree that will prepare students to work in the field as practitioners of public health. Public health practitioners unite in a common goal of promoting health, preventing disease and injury, protecting the environment, and assuring optimal health services. Efforts are focused on communities and populations.
Students pursuing undergraduate education at the University of Iowa, Coe College, Cornell College, or Grinnell College may consider applying to a U2G program. U2G’s provide an opportunity for students interested in health sciences to earn both their undergraduate and graduate degrees in 5 years.

Masters in Public Affairs (MPAff)

Undergraduate-to-graduate (U2G) degree options are available allowing students to earn a graduate degree in public affairs and an undergraduate degree in less time than would be required to obtain the two degrees independently. This is because courses for one degree are considered as elective credit for the other degree program.
This is a universal U2G. It is open to students in all undergraduate majors at the University of Iowa.
Admission and Eligibility
Students should apply before the end of their junior year.
To be eligible for the MPAff U2G program, students must have the following record:
- Completion of 80 s.h. of undergraduate work
- Transfer students need to have completed 30 s.h. at the University of Iowa
- GPA of 3.25
- Program is usually completed in senior year (senior classification/standing)

Requirements
While the requirements of each U2G degree option vary, all have several key features in common. In each case a student must:
- Complete an approved area of concentration (either public and nonprofit management or public policy) in public affairs.
- Take at least 42 semester hours of public affairs courses that have been previously approved to count towards the master’s degree.
- Unless otherwise specified, a capstone is required of students in combined degree programs.
- Satisfy public affairs’ final examination requirement

The College of Liberal Arts & Sciences (CLAS) and the UI College of Law have developed the 3+3 program for undergraduate students who are interested in completing a bachelor’s degree and law degree in six years instead of seven. Students who complete the program requirements will reduce time spent in college, and therefore save one year of undergraduate tuition and living expenses.
Under the 3+3 Program, current UI students may apply to the UI law school during their junior year and, if they are accepted, begin attending law school during what would have been their senior year. The credits earned during the first year of law school will also apply toward the undergraduate degree.
Prospective and continuing undergraduate students may be eligible for the 3+3 program. All students may contact diane-hauser@uiowa.edu to get more information.
Continuing students enrolled at the UI should contact their pre-law advisor, or declare pre-law and receive an advisor assignment at the Academic Advising Center. Pre-law advisors will help students prepare for the UI College of Law admission process. In addition, continuing students should also contact their departmental advisor to determine whether the desired major will fit into the 3+3 graduation plan. Not all CLAS majors are eligible to be partnered with the 3+3 program. However, with careful advanced planning, many CLAS majors may be considered for the program.
Students must submit a document verifying completion of 90 s.h., along with all major and general education requirements with the UI Law School application. This document must be signed by the departmental advisor and by the Dean’s Office in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, 120 Schaeffer Hall. The verification form may be downloaded here.
