Jennifer Haylett, associate professor of instruction in the Department of Sociology and Criminology, has been selected as the 2024-25 Faculty Fellow for Excellence in Teaching and Learning.

"We are excited to partner with Jenn on teaching and learning strategic initiatives,” says Tanya Uden-Holman, associate provost for undergraduate education. “Her rich experiences at the University of Iowa have been instrumental in supporting student success, and we look forward to benefiting from her expertise.”

The Faculty Fellow role was created to support progress towards the Excellence in Teaching and Learning goal outlined in the University of Iowa Strategic Plan for 2022-2027. Haylett was chosen from a competitive pool of applicants due to her demonstrated commitment to life-long learning and dedication to student mentorship and meeting diverse student needs.

As a Faculty Fellow, Haylett will focus on enhancing support, incentives, and structures that facilitate teaching excellence and student learning. Her responsibilities will include supporting the implementation of the Teaching Assessment Framework based on best practices at peer institutions and collaborating on additional projects that support the Excellence in Teaching and Learning goal.

Haylett has been a faculty member at the University of Iowa since 2015, teaching a wide range of courses, as well as creating and modifying courses to better meet diverse students' needs. Haylett demonstrates a strong commitment to mentoring students, as she believes mentorship is critical to effective teaching and learning. Over the years she has mentored many students throughout their internships, teaching practicum, honors theses, and research experiences. Last fall, she received the Award for Outstanding First-Generation Student Advocacy, highlighting the positive differences she has made in supporting first-generation student success.

Haylett has been part of numerous committees that focus on effective teaching and learning. Within the Department of Sociology and Criminology, she is the Director of Undergraduate Studies, Honors Advisor, and serves on the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee. She previously served on the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences General Education Curriculum Committee and Strategic Planning Steering Committee, which allowed her to gain a better understanding of how to effectively serve students and faculty.

This is the second year the Office of the Provost has offered the Faculty Fellow for Excellence in Teaching and Learning role. Last year, Brian Lai, associate professor and DEO of the Department of Political Science, and Jodi Linley, associate professor in the Department of Educational Policy and Leadership Studies, served as the inaugural fellows.
