Sociology Ph.D. candidate Chad Rhym was recently featured in the University of Iowa's Dare to Discover campaign. The campaign highlights research by both graduate and undergraduate students at the university. Along with their research publicized on their website, Chad Rhym can be seen on a street banner in downtown Iowa City.
Chad's research studies objectivity in journalism through the lens of race in the United States. For his research, he interviewed three generations of journalists: student, early/mid-staged, and veteran-staged journalists about how they learn, engage, defend, and criticize journalistic objectivity, with a particular focus on the last four years. He is comparing these cohorts’ experiences with professional training they received in higher education and in the field, their stance on objectivity, and their perspective on how events beyond journalism have changed reporting.
